We’re excited to announce the ScrapFest Documentary Season 1!

Welcome to ScrapFest!

A repurpose-focused art festival, with a scrap metal sculpture competition, eco-art booth vendors, family activities, live music, and food!

What is ScrapFest?

ScrapFest began as a scrap metal artwork competition, and has grown into a full art festival that focuses on up-cycled and repurposed artwork. Now, the festival has not only the scrap metal sculpture competition, but also eco-art booth vendors, family activities, live music, food, The Great Scrap Run 8k run/walk (with family fun run), and a Refashion Show!

For the competition portion, teams get an hour to pick up to 500 lbs (or 250 lbs for the Small Piece category) of metal from Friedland Industries’ processing plant in Old Town Lansing, and then get a month to create a sculpture. The pieces are auctioned off in Old Town Lansing on Turner St in mid July.

70% of the proceeds go to the artists, 20% goes to ScrapFest, and 10% of the proceeds go to a local charity (for 2024, we are partnering with Lansing SAVE!).

How ScrapFest Promotes Community Growth

ScrapFest promotes community growth! Here’s a great example.

Cinnaire is a non-profit organization that provides capital to projects that add social value. They have a branch in REO Town Lansing, and had a plot of land they needed a artwork for.

They decided to purchase a sculpture from ScrapFest, and made the installation of that sculpture into an event, establishing that plot of land as a perfect example of advancing community place-making. The area is now called Hope Park.

The community loves them for putting their dollars back into Lansing.

Here are some articles about the installation!
